Kids grow up dreaming about how God might use them in the world as firefighters, astronauts, or teachers. They often have a stronger sense of calling than adults!
But all too often, after our kids “walk the aisle” and “pray the prayer,” we never validate their God-given desires to work for the betterment of this world—unless, of course, they feel called by God to be pastors or donor-supported missionaries.
When we fail to validate those desires as part of what God has saved us for, young adults often disengage, especially as they enter the worldliness of the workforce. But Genesis 1 and Ephesians 2:10 make it clear that God has created us for good works.
Kids who see God’s purpose for everything they do—not just their evangelism—will be far more likely to draw close to God into adulthood.
A recent book by Jordan Raynor, The Spirit in You, will leave your kids and grandkids amazed by grace and the path to salvation found in Christ alone. It leaves them feeling empowered by the purpose of their salvation—to “do good for all of creation” through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Ask a young boy what he wants to be when he grows up, and nine out of ten will say a professional athlete, because the younger generation is fixated on sports.
The Bible reminds us that all work should be a ministry. A kid can dream of being a Christian electrician or plumber as much as being a Christian quarterback.
The point is that God calls us to a higher calling. No matter what we do, we are called to do it for God as well as for good. This call is not only for the very young, but for all of us at all ages.
