As the warmth of summer fades and the days grow shorter and colder, we arrive at a sacred threshold in the turning of the year.
September 29th we have the festival day of Michaelmas, also called the Feast of Saint Michael and the Feast of the Archangels.
I first learned about Michaelmas through the teachings of Rudolph Steiner who emphasized that true spiritual festivals are not arbitrary dates set by the Church, but are rather cosmic realities: reflections of the rhythms in the Earth, Sun, and spiritual hierarchies.
The Spiritual Meaning of Michaelmas
And as we do…
Archangel Michael steps forward to guide us.
Archangel Michael is often depicted as the radiant warrior angel standing victorious over the dragon.
In esoteric Christianity, when Archangel Michael slays the dragon, it is not seen to be a victory over against any external beast, but rather the victory against inner forces of fear, doubt, and materialism that can overwhelm the human spirit.
The dragon represents the heaviness that pulls us away from spiritual truth, those voices that whisper discouragement, confusion, and hopelessness.
Archangel Michael is seen not only as a saintly protector, but also as a cosmic being leading humanity into a new age of spiritual consciousness.
His task is to help us develop what Steiner called “heart-thinking” aligning wisdom with love so that truth becomes not just an idea, but a living force we embody in the world.
And around the time of Michaelmas…
